How to Choose the Right Black

Our black materials are mainly used in industrial applications to prevent stray light and diffuse reflections. They are available in various material types such as polyurethane sponge, flock sheet, and water-based acrylic paint. We will introduce the features of each type so you can choose the right black that best suits your needs.

Classification by Material

Currently, we are proposing 3 different materials for anti-reflection treatment: Our polyurethane sponge "Fineshut" series, our flock sheet series, and our water-based paint "Musou Black". The main uses include: "Fineshut" for internal parts of optical equipment, flock sheets as auxiliary materials such as black backdrops, and Musou Black paint as a temporary anti-reflection treatment for prototype development.

Musou Black
Features Stable absorption performance from visible light to infrared light. Dust is not easily generated and ideal to be used as an internal material for optical equipment. Cheaper than our Fineshut series and has high absorption performance. Be wary of the risk of dust generation due to fiber-hair loss. Excellent anti-reflection in the visible light range, however the coating is very fragile.
 Applications Internal components of optical instruments. Dark curtain. Backdrop for photography.  Temporary anti-reflection treatment. Hobby use.

We compare the total reflectance rates of our materials based on the AOI8°  condition. Total reflectance is the measurement result of combining both diffuse reflection and specular reflection. AOI8° means that the light is incident at an angle of 8° from the normal.

 

Based on this condition, our Fineshut series stably absorbs light from the ultraviolet to the near-infrared light range. This performance is achieved by the uneven structure derived from the foaming process and the composition of carbon kneaded into the resin.

 

We also offer two types of Flock Sheets: Our "VL Flock Sheet," which is inexpensive and strong in the visible light range, and our "IR Flock Sheet," which has improved near-infrared anti-reflection performance, a weak point of the "VL Flock Sheet".

  

Musou Black's light-reflectance rate will vary depending on the painting method, so please keep that in mind. Musou Black can be applied with a brush and an air-brush. Air-brushing will achieve the darker finish.

This chart explains the maximum size and handling suitability of each material. Because our Fineshut SP is roll-to-roll molded at a width of 1000mm, it can be supplied in a maximum width of 1000mm. Please allow up to 2 months lead time for 1000mm width orders.

 

The maximum size we can provide for our Fineshut KIWAMI is 480mm x 280mm per sheet because it is manufactured one sheet at a time. Since the light-absorbing layer tears easily, the product is always supplied with double-sided tape to ensure strength.

 

The light absorption performance of each material does not degrade with slight contact, however the Musou Black coating is very delicate and can easily be peeled. Please be aware that the peeled coating can generate bits of trash.

DIC 8103D Black 0.15 Non-woven fabric base material. Flexible and highly adaptable to curved surfaces. Leaves very little adhesive residue within a short amount of time, making it easy for re-applying. Can be used for a wide range of applications.
 DIC #8616UJ Black-50(N) 0.05 PET base material. When making small parts, if the tape is thick, the gloss of the adhesive layer on the cut cross section may become a problem. In such a case, this tape is recommended. Note that the release film is a little difficult to peel off.

This chart introduces the double-sided adhesive tapes that we use as standard. Both are black, strong-adhesive, double-sided tapes with excellent light shielding properties. In addition to the tapes listed here, we can also apply other tapes of your choice onto our materials.
